TongjiMedical CollegeOverseas Alumni Association (TJMCOAA)
Annual Report 2006
Dear all board members and overseas alumni:
It is my honor to present the annual report of the merged TJMCOAA 2006. What a magnificent, spectacular, and dramatic year we have been through! With the support of board members and other alumni, the TJMCOAA has reached the following accomplishments.
- The merger of original TJMCOAA and original Tongji Medical University Alumni Association North America. Without question in my mind, the merging of the two associations is the most remarkable achievement we have made in this year, which will strengthen our efforts to develop and execute alumni-interested and beneficial programs/initiatives that will assist our overseas alumni to have a better life in the vibrant and challenging world. I would express my appreciation to all board members, especially Jiamin Teng and Guohua Li, for your extraordinary, constructive, and fruitful performance.
- Establishment of certificates/credential services for overseas alumni. Some of the overseas alumni often need certificates/credentials from TJMC for the development of their professional career abroad (especially alumni pursuing clinical medicine). One of the major concerns prevailing in the overseas alumni has been the inconvenience to acquire certificates and credentials from TJMC. Due to the complexity of application process at TJMC, the association has established the application process for overseas alumni to obtain these documents. I would take this opportunity to thank Peiyi HU (and her brother), Xiaojing ZHANG, Jing PENG and Baihan LI for your impressive, diligent and outstanding work.
- Enhancement of the understanding and collaboration between the TJMCOAA and alma mater. This year, the representatives of the association have visited the TJMC and have strengthened the communication, understanding and perception between overseas alumni and the college. The TJMC has provided or will provide essential support for scientific/educational/clinical collaboration initiated by the association (for instance, the pathology symposium), and to provide necessary services to our overseas alumni. Special thanks to Jiamin TENG, Yan LIU and other board members. Today, the TJMCOAA has significant impact on the alumni and administration on TJ campus.
- Making our contribution to the Centennial of TJMC. A. Writing and editing of the alumni book. A part of the college centennial, the association and TJMC have decided to publish a “book” that includes the introduction of the TJMCOAA, individual experience/achievement, overseas life and names of members (without contact information in the book). The draft of the book has been completed; it is approximately 100 pages (can this be called “book”?). Special thanks to Peiyi HU (she collected most bios for clinical domain), Marilyn LI, Henry LIU, Qiang MA, Jiamin, TENG, Layan TENG, John WANG, Shimian Zou, Xiaoyan ZHONG, Jing DENG, Yan LIU, Keqin HU, etc). Without doubt, the alumni book will enhance the potential to establish positive images of the TJMCOAA at the college and overseas alumni. B. Assembly of the association’s delegation for the TJ centennial/symposium has been approved by the board. Jiamin Teng and Dale Tang will coordinate the activity. C. Two scholarships have been approved for TJMC college students, which will be part of our contributions to the TJMC centennial.
- Establishment of the working mechanism for the board. After the merger, the board has discussed several important issues such as the alumni book, the association’s structure, etc. Through the discussion and consultation, we have established or restated the working mechanism for the board: If a president or board memberintends to initiate an alumnus-interested and beneficial program/thing, the person needs to present the idea/proposal to the board (the Board email group) for discussion. Under most conditions, the proposal may need some revisions. If there is no serious objection is raised within a week, the idea/proposal is considered to be approved by the board. However, if serious objection is raised, the STANDING board members will cast the vote to decide the fate of the proposal. Currently, there are 26 STANDING board members in the association, which is a core part of the merger agreement.
- Sponsorship of overseas alumni reunion. The association has morally sponsored several alumni reunions coordinated by our board members. For instance, E77-1 overseas alumni reunion in Houston, E77-2’s reunion in Canada, and E77-3’s reunion in Los Angeles were assisted by some board members. In addition, TJMC overseas alumni have several gatherings in Albany, New York this year. More than 20 alumni and family members joined the reunions/gatherings.
- Establishment of collaboration with Zhang and Associates, PC and the Knowledge Company. Attorney Zhangand his company are well recognized to provide extraordinary immigration services and other services to overseas Chinese. The Knowledge Company is able to provide lawful educational and credential evaluations and services to the community as well. The association has strengthened the collaboration with the two entities. Our members will receive their services at discount price, which is one of the services we can bring to our friends. Special thanks to Jiamin Teng, Jing Deng and Jing Peng for your incredible team work.
- Upgrading of the website. Our IT team has done super job this year regarding the maintenance and refreshment of website. Special thanks to Jing DENG, Lanjing ZHANG and Huanchen LI for their unforgettable, essential and critical work. With the addition of a new IT member, the association is in a better position to upgrade the website, our home for all TJMC overseas alumni. I anticipate that the website will be improved in the years to come, as long as we keep working as what we have been doing.
- Fundraiser and donations. In 2006, the association has received approximately $2,000 donations and sponsorships. We will have a separate fiscal report for the year.
I appreciate the board members and the overseas alumni who have supported the association in various ways in this magnificent year. Also, I anticipate that the next president, Guohua Li, will help the association on her journey towards great success in the next year.
Happy New Year!
Dale Tang / President 2006
