Dear TJMCOAA Members:
Year 2009 is to be over soon. Thanks to the joint effort by all the members, TJMCOAA has made encouraging progress in the past year. This organization, the family of all TJMC overseas alumni, has grown bigger and more mature, and has become more enjoyable for many members.
First of all, I would like to thank all those who donated to this association. Their generosity made it possible for us to carry out a series of activities that will prove beneficial not only to the Alma Mater and all our alumni, but also to the humanity in general. We successfully accomplished our goal for our contribution to Qiu Fazu Foundation that was initiated by our Past-President Jiamin Teng. We awarded scholarship to 3 medical students who demonstrated great academic potential but were in terrible finacial distress. Another Past-President, Dr. Guohua Li, together with Dr. Huiyun Xiang, Mengrong Li and Sijiu Shen, compiled a collection of scientific publications from TJMCOAA members during the past year, which helped disseminate knowledge and was well received and praised by our counterpart in TJMC. Dr. Hengyi (Henry) Liu, our 2010 President, helped to establish a resident exchange program between Tulane University and the Union Hospital of TJMC, which will provide opportunities for high quality training of medical students and residents from China and America, and promote understanding and thus improving the medical systems of both countries. TJMCOAA also sponsored the Larry Zhang English Competition and the reception of TJMC visitors in New Orleans, Houston, Philadelphia, Boston, Albany, Chicago, and San Francisco. All these activities will make the world better and “smaller”.
In order to help with overseas alumni's survival and success, we have made great effort to push TJMC to improve their credential and certificate confirmation process, and, finally, obtained enthusiastic support from the Dean and cooperation from the Students Office. While still improving, the credential and certificate confirmation requests are now processed much more efficiently than before. We should thank our Vice President and Director of Credential Division, Dr. Peiyi Hu, for her selfless and diligent effort to serve our alumni. Please notify her if anyone intended to obtain credential or certificate confirmation from TJMC or experienced any problem in such process.
Many of our members are physicians or other medical professionals in the United States and other western countries. In order to take advantage of this resource, we established the TLMCOAA Medical Advisory Service". Drs. Wei Peng, Keqin Hu, Sijiu Shen, Peiyi Hu, Henry Liu, Wuyi Xia and Dongfeng Tan and others helped organize the service. Many alumni volunteered to join this Advisors' team, devoting their time, knowledge and expertise to help us understand and utilize the health systems of our residing countries and improve the mental and physical health of our alumni.
I should emphasize that TJMCOAA is a volunteer organization, and is run by all those selfless and devoting volunteers. Many members continued to serve their caring role even when their personal lives are facing challenges. Take our Newsletter as an example. In order to compose a high quality Newsletter, our Editor-in-Chief Dr. Hu Ding, and Editor Dr. Jiamin Teng, have to monitor all the activities going on in relation to our association, and periodically put things together. Many times they need to solicit articles from others, and many times their need to write themselves. Many of us may not know that during the past year, both of them experienced serious job security issues. There are also quite a few other Board members who experienced health, family, or career difficulties, but they never let it down. I am deeply touched by their devotion to this organization, and their spirit of “making the world a better place to live.” I do not encourage anyone to overly sacrifice one’s own interest to serve the association. I hope, though, that all those who can afford, please participate whenever you can, to share the duties of the “family”.
On behalf of TJMCOAA, I would like to express a special gratitude to two groups of “staff members”. For a long time, they have been working extremely hard behind the scene. One is our Financial Division with Xiaojing Zhang, Ming Chen and Jing Peng. The other is our IT team with Leon Gong, Lanjing Zhang, Guanzu Wang, Jing Deng, Gary Lu, and others. Their work is critical and vital to this organization, and requires so much effort and devotion that they have to take turns to continue the services. These jobs have taken toll on these people. Owning to their tireless effort, we have established a new website that is easier to maintain and update, and thus will provide better communication service to our alumni. Right now, they are trying to transfer articles from the old website (tongjioversea.org) to the new site (tongjiyiren.com). We have 4-5 years’ content on the web, and it would take quite a while to complete the transition. It will be a while before the advantage of the new website begins to emerge. I urge everyone to have a look of the new website, to pay frequent visits to our new “home” and provide your opinion as to how to make it a better home for everyone.
Just when I was feeling lucky to have had a relatively uneventful year and began to countdown my days as President, something historical for this organization happened. This was the vast participation of our alumni in the heated discussion of several social issues. The first one was triggered by the CCTV disclosure of medical errors that involved the death of one of our alumni. Other discussions and debates were triggered by several articles recommended by individual members. I am glad to see that even though we have different opinions on different issues, we all share the same goal: a better, more democratic, and more humane world. During the heated discussions and debates, our members have demonstrated in-depth vision and social maturity. We all learned something from each other, and inspired each other. I hope to see more activities like these, and hope that during future discussion or debate on any issue, we remain respectful to each other, no matter how different our points of view might be.
I would like very much to take this opportunity to thank a special person. Initially I plan to do so in private, but decided that this would have been unfair to her. This person is my wife, Li Han, who is also one of our alumni. I have a busy job for a living, while I also need to spend a great deal of time as President of TJMCOAA. I am not an efficient person, but always want to try the best. It usually takes several hours to write a page of notes. As a result, much house work that was supposed to be mine became hers, including sending our 14 year old son to various activities. Many a time she wanted my help, but when she saw that I was busy with alumni affairs, she would jokingly say: “Forget about it, be with you Great Cause!” And then started to do what was supposed to be my share of the family duties. I simply cannot perform my “job” without her support. She should be credited for any contribution, if any, that I have made to this association.
I am often bothered by the thought that my capability is so limited and I cannot respond to the need of this association effectively or deal with all issues in a timely fashion. Nonetheless, I am happy to see the progress we have made in the past year, which is possible only because of the joint effort from all members, particularly the Board members and the 2008 President Jiamin Teng and 2010 President Henry Liu. I thank you all for the support from the bottom of my heart! I have no doubt that in the coming year, our organization will see greater achievements under the leadership of our new President, Dr. Henry Liu.
Wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2010!
Baihan Li

目前,他们正忙于网页内容由旧网址(tongjioversea.org)向新网址(tongjiyiren.com)的过渡。
