Dear alumni:
Three work priorities were identified and set at the beginning of my term including digitalization of ECFMG application and verification, and transcript request; revival of many successful academic programs; and alumni mentorship program. The first two have been accomplished and the last still has some space to grow. Now TJMC applicants could get credentials verified by ECFMG within 2 days with a much reduce cost (faster and cheaper). Those projects were embraced and supported by many of our alumni, the board of trustees and the general board. I thank you for joining me in these great causes.
· Academics: 1). We revived the TJMCOAA scholarship program which awarded 4 scholarships of $500 each to 4 unprivileged undergraduate students of Tongji Medical College (TJMC). 2). We initiated the TJMCOAA-Wuhan Union Hospital Overseas Scholar Forum. Four overseas alumni presented our work in Wuhan Union Hospital in Sept, 2013. 3). TJMCOAA-Landing English Competition has also been jointly led by us and TJMC. We are grateful to Dr Duanping Liao, Academics VP.
· Career development: The mentorship program was kicked off on Jan. 14, 2013, have served 2 alumni participated as mentees, and produced some articles on advising young alumni. I thank Drs Mark Chuanyi Lu and Dale Dachun Tang for their great efforts in running the program.
· Finances: 1). We for the first time published TJMCOAA categorized expenditures, which has been updated. We have also met a budget balance, with $2894 in expenses and $2800 in donation. I would like to express my gratitude to Xiaojing Zhang for her constant and invaluable support, as the finance VP and an advisor. Shiping Jiang and Zheng Zhang’s dedication is also very much appreciated. 2). We have archived and digitalized all of the donators from 2005-2013 on www.tongjioversea.org . 3). My sincere thanks go to the following individuals for their generosity:
Xia Bu, Min Chen, Hu Ding, Keqin Hu, Fang Jiang, Shiping Jiang, Baihan Li, Gary Lu, Gangjian Qin, Shijiu Shen, Erjia Wang, Lanjing Zhang, Xiaojing Zhang, Sherry Qi Zhou.
· Membership: 1).We retained our active member mass, despite the loss due to unpleasant comments on the Yahoo mailing list. 2). We are also pleased that several younger alumni were elected into the board to better represent our alumni’s demographics. 3). An expert list of more than 250 alumni has been developed by F Cao, LL Chen, B Li, XC Nie, G Qin, TG Wang, LL Xie, D Zhao, H Zhou, Y Zhu and L Zhang. The expert list advisory committee includes John Q Wang, Huilin Pan, Ruiping Xiao, Gangjian Qin; Guohua Li, Huiyun Xiang; Lanjing Zhang, Henry Liu,Baihan Li, Yuguang He, Tao Zheng; Erjia Wang, Zuyu Guo, Harry Xia and Boqing Deng. The list is available at http://tongjioversea.org/node/25466/ or http://tinyurl.com/tjmcoaael
· Public relation and outreach: Dr Gang Wang had helped promote TJMCOAA whenever he could. For example, he attended the memorial service of, Lingzi Lu, the Chinese student victim in Boston Marathon bombing on behalf of us.
· Publication services: Our newsletter program continued its great success. Several well-received issues have been published and circulated among the alumni. The reunion of class 1978 was one of the exciting foci of the issues. My sincere thanks go to Drs Hu Ding, the editor in chief, Jiamin Teng, Min Cheng and Shimian Zhou.
· Publication yearbook: Our 2013 edition is composed of 76 articles authored by 34 alumni published from late 2010 to July 2013, and was edited by Harry Huaxiang Xia (editor), Linglin Xie, Huiyun Xiang, Shiqian Shen and Zhiyong Peng.
· Local activities: Many alumni have organized and participated in local activities. Among them, the local chapters were successfully led by Drs Xia Bu and Huanchen Li in Boston, Zhiyong Hong in Canada, Steve Shen and Qian Xiang in Texas, Ke-Qin Hu in California, and many others.
Several alumni have moved or promoted. We are also very proud that Dr Shengshou Hu was elected into Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2013.
TJMCOAA is a young Non-Profit Organization. There is still much to do. We fortunately have the experienced and enthusiastic leaders, Drs Sijiu S Shen and Erjia Wang, as our 2014 president and president elect. A brighter future is up coming. I look forward to it.
It is my great honor and pleasure to serve this Alumni community and our fellow alumni, particularly within the capacity of her president in 2013. By ending this annual report, I cannot help but recall the dinner in 2006, at which I first met Dr Guohua Li and he invited me to join his team for TJMOCAA –he has since coached me on numerous occasions and issues. Through those years, I evolved from a postdoc and intern to an attending physician, while our Association also became more mature, transparent and accountable. My mind also flew to the hot summer of 2006, my first year as a resident at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City. Then, our warmhearted alum and beloved friend, Dr Pengfei Gong, went to the LGA airport to pick me up and situated me for my most difficult and rich years of residency training.
Those moments always drive me to work as hard as possible for my fellow alumni, and try to pay back to you. I thank you all for your trust and support. Please feel free to write me whenever you plan to come to Princeton, New Jersey.
Respectfully,
Lanjing Zhang, MD, MS
