Fishville’s Notes: In this father’s day weekend, I think it is a perfect time for me to put the lyrics of a song entitled “You Raise Me Up” here. It was pretty much an Irish song in which its lyrics was written by Brendan Graham and the classic Irish melody was created by Rolf Lovland. The lyrics per se was so beautifully done that itself would be an excellent piece for students to learn English language.

Our first experience to appreciate it was in the closing ceremony of our son’s Missouri Scholars Academy (MSA) where gifted high school students were invited to spend a part of summer at the end of their tenth grade in Columbia, Missouri. Imaging all Scholars had been organized on the stage singing this “You Raise Me Up” to their proud parents as the audiences, it was an incredible gratitude moment for us. MSA is Missouri’s equivalent to the Governor’s Scholars of the different States. For the balance of tastes, I included the link of the original one performed by Brian Kennedy and two recent ones by Josh Groban and Westline. This song is for all the Fathers.

Josh Groban’s lyrics of “You Raise Me Up”

Musice by Rolf Lovland

Lyrics by Brendan Graham

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

There is no life - no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.
