TJMCOAA 2010 刘恒意主席年度总结报告

Happy 2011 to you!

The end of the year 2010 is only minutes away. It has been a memorable year. From the slow recovery of the ailing economy in the United States to the growing financial crisis in Europe, from Haiti’s tragic earthquake to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, from the military face-off in the Korean peninsula to the trapped coal-miners in Peru, from a TJMC alumnus’ killing of his previous supervisor to a notable TJMC scientist’s beating of FZZ, both natural and man-made disasters of this year have thrown our world into a seeming chaos. But we must stay positive; “危机危机, 有危就有机”, and I personally have been very happy to serve as the president of Tongji Medical College Overseas Alumni Association (TJMCOAA) during the past eventful year; I loved my “job”.

If you recall, at the beginning of this year I set some very realistic goals for TJMCOAA. I believe we have achieved most of those goals now. Here is what we have accomplished in 2010:

1. Haiti Earthquake fundraising: at the beginning of 2010, Haiti, a tiny and poor island country in central America, experienced one of the worst earthquakes/disasters in recent history. TJMCOAA immediately launched a fundraising campaign to help the victims in Haiti. We collected about $1000 which was delivered to the American Red Cross.

2. “501(c) 3 status” approved: TJMCOAA had been working on obtaining this tax-exempt status for several years, but by late 2009, we had reached a point where we had to decide either to continue the application process or give up entirely. We were, as the saying goes, between “a rock and a hard place”. Our TJMCOAA Board decided to fight this uphill battle. It was the right decision, we triumphed ultimately. I have to thank Xiaojing Zhang, Dale Tang, Guohua Li, John Wang and Baihan Li for having been so committed to get this job done.

3. Bylaw amendments: Our TJMCOAA is expanding; the demand for democratic management is ever-increasing. We have, therefore, amended our Bylaws to reflect this trend. The close-to-final/latest version is currently posted on our website (http://www.tongjioversea.org/tjmcoaa/home/index.htm). The key changes in the latest version are that we have now set limits on the term of board members (board members will have a three-year term); instituted open elections, now that we have 差额选举vs 原来的等额选举; and implemented an organization-wide nomination policy for candidates for all board positions (this differs from our old policy, wherein only board members could submit nominations). Dr. Baihan Li has been working tirelessly for almost the whole year for this task.

4. Organizational restructuring: we have been placing an increased emphasis on the importance of regional activities within our alumni association. TJMCOAA has been working on setting up regional chapters, and we have appointed many Regional Directors to guide these new chapters. The Boston metropolitan area, in particular, has been doing a fantastic job in terms of organizing alumni events, hosting TJMC/HUST delegations, and helping visiting TJMC alumni. Their efforts in collaboration with the HUST alumni associations are especially noteworthy. We have slightly increased our European representation this year, though I believe we can see even more, and we also increased the percentage of younger alumni involvement in the TJMCOAA Board, though greater representation from the younger members of our society is still needed. We will continue to work on this in the year 2011 as one of our long-term projects.

5. Donation for Wang Lishan: In late April of this year, our TJMC alumnus, Dr. Lishan Wang, did something unbelievable for which he was incarcerated, leaving his family in a state of disaster. TJMCOAA immediately issued the basic principles of dealing with this disaster (同济医学院海外校友总会对校友王骊山之事的办理意见, 4/27/2010 email), launched an organization-wide plan to come to their aid, and started fundraising for Wang's family in collaboration with the Atlanta area Chinese community and many other organizations. After two months, donations from all over the world topped $100,000. Wang Lishan family’s apartment is now more suitable for living, and their children are doing their homework at home and making the best of their new life. A formal Trust Fund for the Wang Family will be established sometime soon. The available fund, if it maintains at the current payout rate of $1000/month, will last over ten years, long enough to send their youngest son to college. Drs. Min Chen, Leon Gong, Chaoyang Li, and Shaohua Hu coordinated the collective efforts of various Chinese organizations and many individuals; Dr. Min Chen has been updating us on a regular basis and writing articles to the Chinese news media. Many thanks go especially to those TJMCO alumni in the Atlanta area, as well as in many other areas.

6. TJMCOAA Emergency Fund: In May 2010, TJMCOAA set up the Emergency Fund in order to handle crises such as the one Ms. Ma Lan, Wang Lishan’s wife, has had to face; so far, we have been able to raise $2,450.

7. The Qiu Foundation has officially appointed some of our alumni to their Board. Though the Qiu Foundation management team had been talking about doing so for some time, they officially issued the board membership certificates to our overseas alumni only about two months ago. I have to thank Dr. Jiamin Teng for having been so active and enthusiastic in this matter.

8. Annual TJMCOAA publications collection: This year, TJMCOAA presented one copy of our annual publications collection to the TJMC Medical Library and another copy to HUST President Li Peigen as a gift while he and his group were on a visit to the USA. Drs. Huiyun Xiang, Guohua Li, Sijiu Shen and Marilyn Li should take the credit for their great work.

9. Union Hospital delegation’s visit: in June and July, TJMCOAA coordinated Union Hospital delegation’s visit to the USA, which was headed by Dr. Guobin Wang, who is also one of the senior administrators of HUST. During their trip, they visited Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, and Miami, with many TJMC alumni in participation, and who made contributions to their visits. Special thanks should go to Drs. Xiaoliu Zhang, Jing Peng, Yuguang He, Weike Tao, Marilyn Li, Hua Li etc.

10. TJMC members Jing Peng, Wei Chen, and Weiping Zhou attended Tongji Hospital’s 110th Anniversary on behalf of TJMCOAA. A beautifully designed plaque was presented to the CEO and VP of Tongji Hospital.

11. TJMCOAA Scholarship: this year we again sponsored the TJMCOAA Scholarship, which gives financial aid to TJMC medical students who are in financial hardship. In 2010, we were able to support four students. We are now working on improving the selection and awarding process. Dr. John Wang has been a key person to get this job done.

12. TJMCOAA signed a five year agreement with Landing High-tech Company to sponsor the TJMCOAA Landing Cup Postgraduate English Competition. This agreement will offer us the continuity of sponsoring this great event for the coming five years. Dr. Jiamin Teng has been very instrumental to achieve this sponsorship.

13. Office of Overseas Alumni in TJMC: after years of request, TJMC has finally agreed to designate an Office of Overseas Alumni. This office will be headed by our old friend Mr. Yinghan Chen. This is a symbol that TJMCOAA has gained the recognition of TJMC/HUST administration, and TJMC is paying more attention to the affairs of overseas alumni.

14. TJMCOAA United Kingdom chapter played a crucial role in organizing and coordinating the efforts to welcome湖北人才代表团(with HUST/Union Hospital Officials)’s UK visit and subsequently an UK alumni gathering. Drs. XIA Zhidao, LEI Ming, LIU Kun, Jing Deng and many others made key contributions.

15. Financial status of TJMCOAA: Overall, we did very well this year financially. We have more than doubled our treasury in 2010. A separate financial report will be submitted to the Board of TJMCOAA by Drs. Xiaojing Zhang, Ming Chen and Jing Peng. They have been working hard to help our TJMCOAA in critically important financial issues.

One of our goals from the beginning of the year 2010 which has not been satisfactorily accomplished is that of making meaningful improvements on the TJMCOAA new website (tongjiyiren.com). Luckily, Dr. Baihan Li has stepped up to the challenge, and he has been publishing weekly updates on our old website (www.tongjioversea.org), so that every week there is new content to be found on our website. I hope that you will all make visits to the two websites.

During my presidency, many TJMC alumni have offered a helping hand, innovative ideas, and constructive suggestions, which have surely made my presidency a highly enjoyable experience. I cannot thank them enough. The only thing I can do to return their favor is to serve TJMCOAA the best I can. There is no way that I can thank you all enough by name, but please recognize that I am truly grateful to each and every one of you for the help that you have given me in the service of TJMCOAA.

Again, TJMCOAA is our home away from home -- so let’s build it, maintain it, and love it.

A very Happy New Year to you all!!

Henry Liu, MD
